Apple HDR to Arri Rec709
Does your iPhone footage look weird? Odd, washed out and greenish? I got you.
As a DP who edits I often get asked to edit social media content for brands. The problem I’ve ran into is the AWFUL gamma shift when bringing Apple HDR footage into Davinci.
Instead of having to color manage and transform every clip in the project. I’ve created a Power Grade and a LUT that works and looks better than the iPhone color.
Here’s 3 ways to use it.
1) Just drop the LUT or power grade on the clip and you’re done.
2) If you have a massive edit and it’s just iPhone HDR footage, drop the LUT or Power Grade on the timeline level and color the entire project in 1 node.
3 Similarly, if you have mixed media. Say iPhone HDR and some other cameras. Just create a group with iPhone HDR footage. Label it “Apple HDR”. Paste the Power Grade in the “Pre-Group”, delete/mute the OUT node on the Pre-Group. Go to “Post-Group” Apply the Power Grade and delete/mute the IN node. Then you can just adjust everything at the clip level with the mixed media.
Listen, I know what you’re thinking. This guy works with iPhone footage? What does he know? Since 2014 I’ve been involved with a social media agency, WAY before social media was the monster that it is now.
Here’s my philosophy on shooting social content for large brands and companies. Unless you’re wanting to work in the social media space, this type of work will NOT move the needle for your career if you’re trying to make movies and TV. But it is a job, and someone is going to get paid for it. You may as well do it if you’re free.
That being said, with non-needle moving work, out price yourself. Rental houses do it when they don’t want to put an order together last minute before a holiday.
Often times they have no idea what it costs. They’re used to working with influencers who charge 100x what you’re going to ask for even trying to out price yourself. So when you say you can do that, “quick social shoot and edit” for $6,000. You’d be surprised how often the brands say “yes”. They need it. They don’t want it. They NEED it.
So save yourself the headache of dealing with weird gamma shifted iPhone HDR footage and slap this LUT or Power Grade on your footage.
